Grow one fruit or veg crop this season
Growing your own food is a powerful way to reconnect with where your food comes from, whilst making a positive impact on the planet, improving your own health and benefiting local wildlife too.
Whether you have an allotment plot, a garden, or barely any space at all, everyone can grow something at home.
Spring is a busy time for farmers and home-growers, as warmer weather and longer days makes it perfect for planting! Here's a few recommendations for planting and propagating:
Beetroot: start sowing your summer crop of beetroot outside from March onwards
Spinach: sow from early spring to the middle of June
Kale: sow in April or May
Onion & shallots: get planting outside as soon as the last frost has passed
Radish: sow outside
Carrots: plant outside in loose, sandy soil in early spring to harvest in the autumn
Courgette & squash: autumn veg you can begin to sow indoors
Leeks: sow outside for harvesting from September onwards
A few tips to get you started:
Planting in pots help you get back to your roots wherever you are, especially if you're living in rented properties. They don’t have to live outside either; ‘container growing’ opens up a whole indoor experience of fruit, veg and fungi-growing possibilities, all of which will have a wonderful world of microbiology living within their soils.
Visiting or volunteering at your neighbourhood community garden veg patch is a great way to connect with your food if there's no space at home.
