Update to Defra's requirements when considering non-organic livestock requests

We have been informed of an update to Defra’s requirements when considering non-organic livestock requests.

For both poultry and livestock derogations, licensees will now be required to evidence:

  • If there are suitable organic animals of the same species advertised for sale, licensees must show evidence why those listed are either not suitable or would not be available to them. This must include a list of the names and contact details of the organic suppliers that have been contacted in attempts to source the animals, and dates contacted; and/or

  • Advertising the need for the animals on a recognised organic marketplace for at least five working days.

Below is a list of suggested marketplaces:

We have a list of organic poultry suppliers available on our website.

If you have any questions please contact your certification officer.
