Visit an organic farm

Pound Farm, Herefordshire

Pound Farm comprises 224 hectares of the  Holme Lacy Estate, rising up from the River Wye in Herefordshire. As part of the innovative Project Carrot, the farm aims to be a beacon of best practice in sustainable land management and an educational resource for students and researchers. Visit the farm to find out more.

Landscape

The farm has a very wide range of soils including those in the fertile flood meadows of the River Wye, light gravel soils on the river terraces and more typical Herefordshire clay loams on the higher ground. The farm has an ancient parkland with oak trees over 500 years old, old orchards and woodland.

Organic crop rotation

The farm grows a variety of crops in a six-year organic rotation. Two years of  grass and clover build fertility and provide the nutrients for the ‘hungry’ potato crop in year three and wheat in year four. Beans (a legume like clover) adds nitrogen to the soil ready for a wheat crop in year six and then the cycle starts over again.

Organic livestock

The sheep flock of 400 ewes consists of two main breeds –mules and Lleyns. The majority of the flock will lamb outside in May. A herd of 44 pedigree Hereford suckler cows has been established, selecting stock from four of the best herds in the county. These cattle are native to the area and thrive on the organic pastures.

Composting

Careful manure management is key to organic farming. A new composting operation is being created with the potential to use off farm green waste in the future.

Nature conservation

The farm has the most exceptional conservation interest, being dominated by the remains of one of the few surviving medieval deer parks in the country and located on the banks of the River Wye. A conservation plan drawn up by FWAG has established a management plan for the great oaks and park land as well as introducing bug banks, shelter belts and arable field margins all of which will contribute positively to our crop protection as well as to wildlife.
