Visit an organic farm

Cottage Farm, Cornwall

Cottage Farm is a small traditionally run, sustainable organic farm near Jacobstow in North Cornwall. Our animals spend all their lives on our farm grazing peacefully on the lush green permanent pastures of our fields. No fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides are applied. Further more, our animals are fed almost exclusively on grass: no supplements and no GM feeds.

Organic cows

We have chosen a local, traditional breed, the Red Ruby North Devon cattle, which are well suited to the conditions in Cornwall, do well simply on grass and do not need any supplementary feed. As a result, our meat is beautifully marbled, tender and delicious as well as having an excellent flavour. It is also very pleasing to think what happy and peaceful lives the animals have led on our farm: no stress, just open fields of green grass, their idea of heaven! As Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says in his River Cottage Meat book: "The Red Ruby cattle have an excellent, mild temperament and are extremely well adapted  to unfertilized grazing. Bred to withstand harsh winters, they grow more slowly and have natural ability to put on fat reserves. It is this natural growth pace and natural diet that makes the close-grained, well-marbled meat British beef at its best. They simply produce the best beef I have ever tasted."

Self sufficiency

Apart from being organic, we are also converting the farm to be self sufficient in energy. We produce our own bio-diesel from waste vegetable oil to power our car, the land rover and the tractor. We are also installing a wind turbine and solar panels for electricity production, heat store powered by solar and wood burner for hot water and space heating, the wood coming from the farm, our own bore hole water supply and of course we grow our own vegetables, fruit, nuts,  and keep geese and chickens for meat and eggs.

Farm accommodation

Cottage Barn is a home from home. It is cosy, well equipped and has a spectacular galleried bedroom on the first floor. The barn is located in the farming village of Jacobstow near Bude and when you stay here you really are in the middle of farm life unlike so many barn conversions where farming is long forgotten. With its stone exterior and exposed beams, granite blocks and a rough plaster finish inside, Cottage Barn has loads of character.
