Revised COSMOS-standard for organic and natural health and beauty launched
21 October 2013
The Soil Association today launches the revised international COSMOS-standard (COSMOS) for organic and natural health and beauty products.
The new COSMOS-standard revision contains changes which will make it more achievable for genuine organic health and beauty manufacturers whilst remaining the highest international organic and natural standard.
COSMOS is a partnership between five European organisations which together represent a significant proportion of organic and natural health and beauty businesses. The Soil Association joined forces with French organisations Ecocert and Cosmebio, ICEA from Italy and the German BDIH to combine the expertise and experience of the leading organic and natural health and beauty certification and standard setting organisations.
The first COSMOS-standard was launched in January 2011. This latest revision, which will come into force from 1 January 2014, is designed to respond to the challenges currently facing the organic and natural cosmetics market. Difficult economic conditions are putting pressure on the young and still vulnerable organic and natural health and beauty sectors.
This standard revision also aims to streamline the COSMOS certification process and improve efficiency. Key processes and documents have been simplified and technical blockages have been removed, but the integrity and effectiveness of the COSMOS-standard is maintained.
Soil Association organic certified health and beauty businesses will be consulted on the transition arrangements for certification to the COSMOS standard over the coming months.
