Gold Food for Life Chef wins LACA award

Pamela Jamieson has been awarded the Highly Commended Main Course prize in LACA's UK School Chef of the Year award, for her dish of ravioli with tomato sauce and parmesan breadstick.

Pamela JamiesonThe Catering Supervisor at Cumbrae Primary in North Ayrshire has been preparing Gold Catering Mark meals at the school since North Ayrshire Council achieved the Gold award earlier this year. This involves preparing at least 75% of food freshly on site, using local, ethically-sourced and organic ingredients. North Ayrshire is one of two local authorities in Scotland which have achieved the Gold award for their school meals.

Pamela said: "Competitions like the UK School Chef of the Year are helping us to challenge perceptions of school meals and highlight how they have changed for the better."

LACA National Chair, Anne Bull, highlighted the importance of "high quality, nutritious school meals and tasty, highly creative and appealing dishes" in schools, saying: “These meals can make a major contribution towards altering eating habits, changing diets and decreasing obesity levels which in turn, research has shown, will help children and young people to improve their academic and physical performance.”
