Low carbon farming event - Practical measures to reduce farm emissions

25 April 2012

The 2012 programme of low carbon farming events took off with a one day event held in Sydling, near Dorchester. A well attended day, packed with interesting talks and a great farm tour of Sydling Brook Estate.

The morning session was packed with a range of interesting talks from experts on a range of topics. We heard from John Morgan, an adviser from the Farm Advisory Service who spoke about the importance of nutrient and manure management in relation to reducing nitrous oxide emissions; Chris Lloyd joined us from EBLEX and introduced their latest beef and sheep Roadmap and talked us through the range of production efficiency measures that can be tackled to reduce emissions intensity along with the comparitive potential cost savings; Graham Harvey treated us to an inspiring talk on the importance of carbon sequestration, soil biology and grassland management - including a short film from his current project, Pasture Promise TV; Southern Solar joined us to explain the jargon and processes behind the Feed in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive schemes, talking us through the range of solar technologies that can be applied and used on farm; and finally Becky Willson joined us from Duchy College, giving us a speedy run down on the SWARM Knowledge Hub and the fantastic resource it provides via the website.

As the heavens almost held off opening after lunch, Alastair Cooper took us on a tour of his farm - Sydling Brook Estate.  A fascinating trip around the farm, discussing his beef, sheep and arable systems, stimulating good discussions amongst those on board the trailer.

Thank you to all who took part in delivering the day and those who came along, helping to make it a great success.
