Do you allow modified maize starch as an ingredient?

Modified is not the same as genetically modified. As well as prohibiting all GM ingredients and their derivatives, our standards do not allow the 'chemical modification' of starch.

Chemical modification of starch is the addition of chemical groups to the starch molecules. The most common additions would be carboxymethyl groups which result in carboxymethyl starch. This makes the starch more liable to stay as a gel, but less liable to breakdown by enzymes. Starch which has been subjected to these types of chemical modification would not be permitted in organic products.
