Do I need to be certified to label my textile product as ‘Organic’?

Unlike with organic food there is no EU regulation on labelling textile products as organic. However, in the UK Trading Standards or Advertising Standards may require companies labelling textile products as ‘organic’ to prove these claims, through certification at the farm level as a minimum. In the USA there is stricter regulation. The USDA requires any textile products labelled as ‘organic’ to be certified at the farm level to NOP standards. Additionally, the processing must be certified to either NOP or GOTS standards. We have more information available here.

Soil Association Certification offers one way to prove your organic claims to consumers and regulatory bodies, and ensures you are prepared if there are any changes to labelling regulations for organic textiles.
