Sowing the Future at Waltham Place 19th October 10.30am
19 October 2013 10:30 - 19 October 2013 14:00
Waltham Place would like to invite customers, friends and local residents to join us in sowing a field of spelt by hand!
This is an event to celebrate harvest, to share knowledge and experiences of agriculture and to raise awareness of seed security. For centuries farmers have selected and saved seeds to plant the next year, thus preserving a diverse and healthy range of crops suited to their land. Now with the rise of Genetically Modified seeds and fewer, more powerful seed companies, we are faced with the possibility of not being able to own the very seeds which we have grown. As Organic and Biodynamic growers we believe ‘home grown seeds,’ which are open pollinating, are far better suited to the climate and soil conditions of each individual farm than Genetically Modified seeds produced in a laboratory on the other-side of the world. We firmly believe in naturally evolving genetic diversity. Sowing together, for a GMO free future.
Come and let your voice be heard with action! There will be a short talk before we all take part in broadcasting a field by hand. We will be sowing spelt, an ancient grain dating back beyond the Bronze Age. In celebration of our hard work the sowing will be followed by a light organic lunch for those who wish to stay.
10.30am-2pm. Lunch £5. Please phone 01628 825517 to book your place . Suitable for all ages .
