The Prince of Wales Food & Farming Summer School

The Prince of Wales’s Food and Farming Summer School has been held since 2007, initially at Duchy Home Farm, Tetbury and Highgrove and subsequently at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. This year, we are honoured that His Royal Highness has invited the Organic Research Centre to organise the 2013 Food and Farming Summer School.

The summer school is inspired by The Prince of Wales’s leadership and keen interest over many years in environmental sustainability and the importance of supporting the wider farming community. The Prince of Wales has been personally involved in the development of the programme, with part of the summer school being held at Highgrove and Duchy Home Farm.
 
The summer school engages leading individuals from farming, food businesses, research, government and non-governmental organisations in addressing the challenges of producing sufficient food sustainably, to meet not just the requirements of current but also of future generations. It will seek to grapple with the complexity of the issues, providing unique insights in an integrated framework where biological systems, physical resources, economic realities and social, ethical and policy issues and perspectives are brought into contact with each other. The issues will be addressed by leading experts in a discursive approach, where they are not only presenting but also participating in discussions throughout the event.

Registration:
 
A registration form is available in the event brochure. 
 
Summer school fee and payment:
 
The fee for the event is £500 plus VAT (£600 total) per participant. This does not include accommodation, which must be arranged directly by participants. Bursaries may be available. For your registration to be confirmed, payment must be received within five working days of submission.

Seed saving: the EU horizon and a renewed resurgence

Ben Raskin: We had a good growing season in 2014 with a dry summer and autumn, giving us some good seed ready for planting this year. Meanwhile, at a political level the EU Plant Reproductive Material (seeds, cuttings and baby plants to you and me) legal shenanigans continued. The proposed regulation from the European Commission wanted to simplify the existing confused and cumbersome laws, as well as provide a platform to increase exports to outside the EU and safeguard human health. But this proposal would have further sustained the dominance of the big seed companies (like Monsanto, DuPont and Syngenta) and drastically reduced the number of seed varieties available for growing. The Soil Association, along with many others campaigned against these proposals.
