Andrew and Sara Cross, Gold Hill Organic Farm,Dorset, DT11 8HB

Farm Background: Farm is 60 acres and the main enterprise is horticulture. Established 25yrs ago from 1 acres of veg and 1 polytunnel to 10 acres veg and 9 polytunnels.  Wide range of veg first sold through co-op, box scheme, very basic farm shop open weekends only.  Now more sophisticated farm shop, cafe and gallery. 18 acres of woodland and let out fields to a 3 week long camp.  Did have beef.  Selling Wholesale to Langridge in London.  Emphasizing growing the business organically (not just the veg) and always being inovative but keeping it managable and profitable.  Never relying on one market sector in a small business.  Always having an acre of raised beds and tunnels so that whatever the weather something can be planted and harvested.  It is a low input business. For more information, please visit www.goldhillorganicfarm.com

Attendance is free but advanced booking is absolutely essential. We will send out directions prior to the walk.

My organic hero

Janet Blikmans: Imagine a beautifully sunny day in August, not too hot, a few clouds in the sky, a slight breeze and rolling hills. I arrive on a 100 acre suckler farm in Wiltshire to spend the day with owner Miss Lydia Otter and farm manager Richard Hurford and many more people I meet throughout the day. As well as a small herd of organic Angus sucklers and their offspring (oh and the not so friendly bull Jaguar) there are chickens, donkeys, pigs, goats, dogs and a cat. When I arrive in the morning, like on any average farm, business is in full flow already.
