Was I nudged to the pub last night?

Myles Bremner - 10 February 2011

Myles Bremner: Was it consumer led demand or choice editing that led to a split in the organic movement last night?  Forget pro or anti supermarket, or meat and dairy versus fruit ‘n veg.  The real issue was which pub we go to?

What could we read into the two choices – the corporate controlled mass market Slug and Lettuce, or the local free-house tavern, selling a range of independently brewed ales?  Luckily the schism was not long lasting – the early closure of the local independent (surely choice editing rather than customer demand) led to a sell-out exodus to the corporate world.  Phew, the organic world re-united.

Good workshop on state of the organic consumer market this morning, but a pertinent question from the floor about the fact that 25% of the organic food market wasn’t discussed at all – that of local independents, farm shops et al.  If the SA is going to have a fair debate on pro/anti supermarket should they not ensure they include analysis of the whole market?

Final couple of sessions to come. I notice it’s National Tinnitus Awareness week, is that what’s causing the constant noise interference in the sessions?!
