Canalside CSAThose of you following the great new wannabe national Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) movement will know that they need to raise enough money (£6,500 - a very modest amount by funding standards) to form a national self help network to help the movement go from strength to strength and become a viable alternative reality for everyone, town and country.

I may have blogged about CSA before, but honestly, I can't stop pinching myself that there are dedicated people out there - most of whom are young, full of enthusiasm, and determined that we consumers shall have a better, fresher, healthier deal - who are prepared to graft 24/7 just for us. How many of 'us' would be prepared to do that, and for a pittance?

This is not just my idealism getting the better of me. Those who 'walk the talk' in all walks of life (as opposed to those of us who 'talk the walk', myself included) deserve our highest respect and citizen solidarity. They also need our support. As far as food and farming is concerned, do we really want a future eating GM crops, and a food system lorded over by Pharma companies, the frighteningly de-nutrient-ifying de-humanizing food processing industry, and anyone who can make a buck out of delivering cheap food at any cost to us and the planet?

We all bemoan supermarkets, say we'd much rather shop in indies and farmers' markets, want to feed our children happy, healthy organic veg, are fed up with the current food system which puts profit over nourishment (actually, is not too interested in real food anyway), and lust after more connection and transparency in our food system. Well, this is our chance to help make that a reality.

Don't forget, too, this is a global movement – there's Teikei in Japan, CSA in the USA, and AMAP in France; in other words, a global force for good, and our chance to be part of the bigger picture for change.
